Hydroseed Care: How to Maintain a Beautiful Lawn

Are you excited about your newly hydroseeded lawn? With a little bit of care and maintenance, you can transform it into a lush, green oasis. In this article, we will guide you through the essential steps to ensure your hydroseeded lawn flourishes and stays healthy. Let’s dive in!

Germination: The First Signs of Success

After proper watering and fertilizing, you can expect germination to begin within 10-14 days. It’s like watching magic unfold before your eyes! Within 5-8 weeks, you’ll be able to mow your lawn, and in about 6-9 months, you’ll have a fully established and thriving green space. Keep in mind that the initial green dye applied to the lawn will fade within 1-5 days. During the first six weeks, try to minimize foot traffic on the newly seeded areas to allow the grass to take root effectively.

Uneven Growth: A Natural Occurrence

In the first few weeks, you may notice that some areas of your lawn come in better than others. Don’t worry; this is completely normal. Factors like varying amounts of sun, shade, and water can contribute to this uneven growth. Around 4-5 weeks into the process, as your lawn begins to fill in, consider gently scratching up the thin areas and seeding them by hand. A mix of fescue, rye, and Kentucky bluegrass works best for the perfect lawn match. “Metro Mix” from SiteOne Landscape is a great option, or you can reach out to us for a small bag of our custom seed blend.

The Importance of Fertilization

Two weeks after the hydroseeding process, make sure to apply an 18-24-12 starter fertilizer to your lawn. You can find this fertilizer at any SiteOne Landscape Supply location. Three weeks later, follow up with another application of the starter fertilizer. For the first three months, continue applying it monthly before transitioning to a regular fertilizing program. If you cannot find a professional fertilizing company, don’t worry – you can do it yourself!

Taming Weeds and the First Mowing

As your lawn matures, you may notice the presence of weeds. Once the lawn begins to fill in, you can take care of them with a weed control fertilizer. However, do not apply any weed control to the lawn for the first 10-12 weeks. It’s important to note that we do not guarantee against weeds.

Approximately five weeks after the hydroseeding process, it’s time for the first mowing. To minimize damage to the new seedlings, mow your lawn when it is dry using a push mower. Leave the clippings on the lawn, but remember to remove any clumps that may cause damage. Avoid allowing your lawn to grow to an unreasonable height, as this can make it difficult to restore it to good condition. Never mow more than 1/3 of your lawn’s height in one go. If your lawn has overgrown, wait 2-3 days between each cut and gradually bring it back down to a height of about 3 inches.

Rain or Shine: Dealing with Washout

In case your hydroseed washes out due to rain or any other circumstances, we’ve got you covered. We will return to spray the area again at 50% of the original cost. However, please note that faded dye is not considered washout. The dye naturally fades within 1-5 days. For a detailed warranty policy, please refer to your original quote.
