Why Do Cactus Buds Fall Off? Let’s Unravel the Mystery!

Are you eagerly awaiting the sight of your cactus blooming, only to be disappointed when the buds fall off? It’s a common occurrence that can leave you wondering what went wrong. In this article, we’ll explore the reasons behind cactus bud drop and provide helpful insights to prevent it from happening.

The Weather: A Fickle Friend

The weather plays a significant role in cactus bud drop. While we often associate cacti with hot, dry desert conditions, excessive heat and sun can actually cause buds to wither and fall off. Cacti in their natural habitats benefit from ample ventilation and fresh air, which indoor-grown cacti lack. Additionally, sudden changes from sunny to overcast weather can also lead to bud drop. Unfortunately, we can’t control the weather, but providing shade cover during heatwaves and ensuring proper air circulation can minimize the risk.

Over or Under Watering Woes

Both overwatering and underwatering can wreak havoc on cactus buds. Desert cacti prefer to dry out between watering sessions. Sitting in constantly wet soil can stress the cactus, causing buds to drop and increasing the risk of rot and fungus. On the other hand, depriving the cactus of water during the growing season can also lead to bud drop. To strike the right balance, water your desert cactus when the soil has dried out. For rainforest epiphytic cacti, like Epiphyllums and Rhipsalis, keep the soil moist during the spring and summer months.

The Perils of Changing Positions

Moving your cactus or rotating it to face the sun might seem like a good idea, but it can trigger bud drop. Cacti are notoriously sensitive to changes in their environment, especially when they’re in bud. Even slight movements can cause buds to fall off. While you may find cacti for sale in shops already in bud, it’s important to note that changing their position can lead to disappointment. It’s best to leave your cactus undisturbed until it finishes flowering.

Insect Pests: Unwelcome Visitors

Insect pests are a common cause of cactus bud drop. Mealy bugs and aphids are particularly notorious for hiding on and in the buds. Mealy bugs typically lurk at the base of buds, damaging their growth and causing them to drop. Aphids, though less common, can also attack buds, especially during later stages of development. Regularly inspect your cactus for signs of pest infestation and remove them gently with a brush or q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol. Avoid using chemical insecticides on the buds, as they may harm the flowers and contribute to bud drop.

The Pitfalls of New Purchases

Buying a cactus already in bud from a shop is exciting, but it can lead to disappointment when the buds drop off. As mentioned earlier, a change in position can trigger bud drop, which is common for Echinopsis cacti often sold in the summer. However, Mammillaria cacti are less likely to drop their buds and are a safer bet for a flowering success. Schlumbergera (Christmas and Thanksgiving Cacti), sold primarily in November and December, frequently experience bud drop a week or two after purchase. Don’t worry though, cacti that drop buds after being brought home will still flower the following year, as long as they’re properly cared for.

Repotting: Timing is Key

Timing is crucial when repotting a cactus. While spring, summer, or early fall are the recommended periods, repotting while the cactus is in bud can cause stress and lead to bud drop. It’s best to wait until your cactus has finished flowering before attempting any repotting. By avoiding repotting during the bud development phase, you give your cactus the best chance to thrive and bloom.

In conclusion, cactus bud drop can be caused by various factors such as weather changes, improper watering, changes in position, insect pests, the nature of new purchases, and untimely repotting. By understanding these reasons and implementing preventive measures, you can enjoy the beauty of fully bloomed cacti.
