What’s the Best Hummingbird Feeder?

If you’re wondering about the best feeder for hummingbirds, you’re not alone. People often ask me this question, and while cleanliness is crucial, there’s more to consider. Let’s delve into what makes a great hummingbird feeder.

The Drawbacks of Metal-Based Feeders

After decades of feeding hummingbirds and visiting host homes to band birds, I’ve encountered both good and bad feeders. Metal-based feeders may be visually appealing with their vibrant reservoirs, but there are problems. These feeders often lack removable port flowers and have bases that can’t be disassembled for cleaning. The narrow necks of these feeders make it challenging to clean the decorative reservoirs thoroughly. Moreover, they can rust over time and leech harmful iron into the nectar, which can be detrimental to hummingbirds.

What to Look for in a Hummingbird Feeder

When choosing a feeder, I prefer those with fewer pieces and parts. I look for feeders with molded red port flowers that are integrated into the base lid. The base should be separable into two parts, and I prefer metal hangers over plastic ones for durability. Additionally, having multiple sizes of the same feeder allows me to adjust for varying hummingbird populations throughout the year, minimizing nectar waste. Ports with oval or round holes are preferable to slits, which can pose risks to hummingbirds getting their bills caught or getting injured during territorial disputes.

Two Recommended Feeder Brands

Considering all these factors, I have two preferred feeder brands: First Nature and Aspects. While both are excellent choices, if I had to choose one, I’d go with Aspects. It has proven to be the easiest to keep clean, allows close monitoring of nectar quality and clarity, comes in multiple sizes, and offers a lifetime guarantee. Although Aspects feeders may be slightly pricier and harder to find than First Nature, the quality and guarantee make them worthwhile investments.

So, there you have it—an actual recommendation for a hummingbird feeder. Keep in mind that personal preferences can vary, and what works for me may not work for you. However, I encourage all of you in search of a new feeder to give Aspects a try.

And remember, no matter the feeder you choose, always prioritize keeping it clean and the nectar clear and fresh. Avoid using red dyes or nectars.

Till next time, happy spring migrations, and welcome back hummingbirds!
